“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” – Romans 15:13 (NIV)
In Genesis 22, we find the account of Abraham, whom God instructed to sacrifice his only son. Abraham obeyed without hesitation. He gathered what was needed for the journey and set out for the land of Moriah. In verse 7, Isaac said, “…Father… the fire and wood are here… but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham’s response in verse 8 reveals the depth of his trust and faith in God: “God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” Because Abraham had invested deeply in his relationship with God, he could speak from confidence and experience.
What do we do when we are tested and don’t know where to turn? Abraham’s example shows that when we know God personally, we can walk in faith even when we don’t see the outcome. Abraham trusted God’s track record. He had proven Him before, and he knew He would do it again.
Here are a few ways Abraham came to know God:
- God as a Guide and Leader: When God called Abraham to leave his homeland and go to an unknown place, Abraham obeyed. Genesis 12:1-4 shows God as a divine leader who directs the steps of those who trust Him.
- God as Provider: “Jehovah Jireh” – The Lord Will Provide (Genesis 22:14). God revealed His nature as a loving and faithful Provider.
- God as a Friend: Abraham experienced God personally as a friend. Isaiah 41:8 and James 2:23 refer to him as “the friend of God,” indicating intimacy established through obedience and faith.
God is concerned with every aspect of our lives. Through Abraham’s experiences, we see the hand of God woven through every trial and triumph. His consistent obedience came from an intimate relationship rooted in prayer and the Word.
Let us, too, take the limits off God, trusting Him fully. When we cultivate joy and remain steadfast through life’s tests, we will see His faithfulness unfold. Keep trusting — your joy will blossom in due season. Shalom!
